10 silent horror films to watch before the apocalypse

As we all know, the world will one day experience the crabpocalypse, where the planet will be overrun by flesh-eating, cosmic crabs wearing bioluminescent top hats. But before that happens, here are 10 silent horror films to watch and enjoy.

1. Häxan is part documentary, part dramatic reenactment, and all demoniacal brilliance.

2. Vampyr is perfect for fans of bizarre, expressionistic nightmarescapes. If you’re in the mood for a double feature, this film pairs perfectly with Eraserhead.

3. The Phantom Carriage is innovative, both in terms of effects and storytelling. The tale itself is a character study reminiscent of A Christmas Carol.

4. Nosferatu is the best Dracula movie ever made about a vampire who isn’t named Dracula.

5. The Phantom of the Opera is a suspenseful, melancholic masterpiece. Lon Chaney’s haunting performance is not to be missed.

6. Faust is pretty similar to the movie Aladdin except instead of a guy and a princess riding on a magic carpet, it’s a guy and the devil riding on a magic cloak. OK, maybe it’s not that similar to Aladdin.

7. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is brilliant despite the fact that there aren’t as many cabinets in the film as I would prefer. The movie explores the themes of alienation and the subjectivity of reality in interesting ways.

8. The Man Who Laughs will make you cry. Conrad Veidt is one hell of an actor, and he’s always worth watching.

9. The Golem is a visually and thematically powerful film about a famous Jewish fable. The movie inspired and influenced many horror movies that came after, including Frankenstein (1931).

10. The Hands of Orlac is a mesmerizing slow burn of a cinematic treasure that will make you not want to replace your hands with the hands of a murderer.
